Makaton Mondays!

What is Makaton?

Makaton is a unique language programme used to support individuals with no speech or those who struggle to communicate. It uses signs, symbols and speech. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention, listening, comprehension, memory and recall. Makaton is the UK's leading language programme for adults and children with learning or communication difficulties.

Who uses Makaton?

Examples of people who may use Makaton are:

- Children who are young and learning to communicate.

- Children who struggle to communicate due to additional needs (e.g. ASD, Cerebal Palsy).

-Children who are non-verbal (unable to use spoken language).

-Nurseries and schools use Makaton to support all children.

-Children who have English as an additional language.

-Children who need to develop confidence in speech.

What do we do?

Every Monday, children who attend Squirrels learn three Makaton signs each week. It is an inclusive activity for all of our learners to participate in regardless of their age and we hope that it sparks an interest for our learners. These signs are easy to learn and they look like the words they represent!

Our staff have also found Makaton beneficial for their professional development and they have been keen to learn signs too!

Although every child is different and may have different needs, everyone is equal and we know that we should treat everybody with the same kindness and respect.

By learning Makaton, we aim for our learners to interact with others through basic communication, build relationships and increase equal opportunities.

Tips when using Makaton:

-Use the signs to support your speech - do not replace it!

-When using Makaton, sign the main word in the sentence. E.g. Would you like more?

-Repetiton is really helpful!

-Use your dominant hand when signing.

-Be consistent and make sure the person you are talking to is looking in your direction.

-Use your tone of voice and facial expressions!

Every student has shown lots of respect and engagement when learning these signs.

Well done everybody!
